Letter: 65% rule would gut class-size law
The governor's plan to thwart the amendment to Florida's Constitution that reduced class sizes is yet another example of how Tallahassee continues to devalue the role of the teacher in public education. To require school districts to spend 65 percent of their budgets in the classrooms will continue the charade, leaving teachers without enough contact time with students. Leaving the class-size caps in place is the only means I see as guaranteeing to families that their children have a developmentally appropriate and manageable number of classmates for whom their teachers can plan and be accountable each year.
